Optimizing for Google Onebox

Knocking the competition down the results page.

SEO Firms - Get on the ball!

As a key person at an up and coming ecommerce site, I’ve talked to my share of SEO firms. I’ve even asked quite a few of them about Google Base optimization. Guess what - most of them don’t do it.

As I was talking to David the other night, it came up that there are only 10 links on the first page, and a new site isn’t going to be in one of those. However, it’s easy enough for a brand new site to get onto the first page of Google for a wide variety of terms by doing some Google Base optimization. Anyone that’s tired of the sandbox should seriously be looking at onebox as not only their short term solution, but also as a long term strategy. Plus, optimizing to be in the top 3 of 100 is much simpler than being in the top 10 of 10M, and there’s no need for linkbuilding. Much easier in my mind.

But even more than just new sites is those clients that monitor the SERPs. How long will it be until they start noticing that their #1 rankings in Google are below 3 other non-paid positions? If I were paying a firm for SEO placement and saw other free listings above my top rankings, I’d be demanding that they get me into those spots as well. How long will it be before other SEO customers begin demanding this of their firms? The answer is probably sooner rather than later.

For all you SEO workers out there, it’s time to get on the ball. If you don’t start offering this service as something standard, one of your competing companies is going to start getting that business. It’s not rocket science getting the top onebox listing, but it’d be best if you start learning this now before you’re 3 steps behind in a 4 step dance. No more excuses - start taking this seriously or get left in the dust.

  1. [...] Even though smart search marketers have been giddy over Google Base for a while and have been using Froogle effectively for a year or 2 or 3, adding a Google Base search refinement option to Google.com will dramatically increase the visibility of the service (I love my obvious statements). I estimate that there are currently about 30,000 merchants actively submitting feeds to Google Base. That number could easily double as search marketing firms wake up to the opportunity and companies like SingleFeed announce full support of Google Custom Attributes. [...]
