When you get to optimizing your base feed, you’re going to want to measure your results. To start with, you’re going to want to know how many impressions each item has received and how many clicks those items have received. To do this, just log in to your base.google.com account and click the link right below “Already using base?”, which is your items. What you’ll see is something similar to the list below.

Item title Item type Status Modified Expires Impr. Clicks Page views

Now, the data here looks pretty cool and all, but it resets each time a new file is processed. That’s because your items are considered new listings at that point. So, while the data is nice, it’s not as useful as it might be.

One sure way to not have this reset is to not upload a file for a few days. While this may not be ideal, it’s certainly better than not having stats. Besides, you’ll probably just be monitoring impressions and clicks for a few days, trying a new optimizaion, then comparing for a few days. I generally try a week at a time for testing myself, but you may want to try longer / shorter based on your product mix.

The big think is that you want to get a baseline reading, do some changes, then test - analyze - adjust your way to the top.

  1. lol, u need ( ) in your captcha…for example I just got 3 * 6 + 4…which could be 18+4 = 22 or 3*10 = 30.

Anyway, nice article. I was wondering beyond this though, how do these clicks show up in your logs? For example, I see traffic from google in so many ways (I left out the queries to protect the innocent):

    http://www.google.com/hws/search?client=dell&adsafe=high&safe=high&channel=us-psp&hl=en&ibd=&q=

    http://www.google.com/ie?q=

    http://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aofficial&channel=s&hl=en&q=

  2. I’ll upload my feed several times a day and/or week and my Impressions/CTC do not reset, am I the only one? Are you FTP’ing or uploading through the site?

  3. Phil,

standard order of operations says that you always multiply before adding, so the result is always:

    3 * 6 = 18

    + 4 = 22
